Christie Baker is a contemporary Canadian painter based in Toronto. She began painting informally in 2019 and deepened her studio practice during Toronto’s pandemic lockdown. Since her first exhibition in 2022, she has developed a rapidly expanding professional practice, with work presented in galleries, juried and curated exhibitions, art fairs, corporate environments, and private collections across Canada and internationally.

Baker’s paintings explore the emotional resonance of the objects and spaces we live with and carry forward. Working on reclaimed textiles and raw linen, she brings together vessels, architectural motifs, and familiar domestic forms, allowing the character of each material to remain visible, “letting the materials remain themselves.” Her paintings are rooted in the language of still life, but are less concerned with simply depicting objects than with the relationships between them: what they hold, what they suggest, and what exists in the spaces between. Through layering, repetition, fragmentation, and carefully considered intervals, Baker creates compositions that invite viewers to slow down and look closely. Her work evokes the quiet pleasures of home, the traces of lives lived around us, and the ways ordinary things can become vessels for memory, connection, and continuity.

Her studio practice has been enriched by artist residencies in Canada and France, including Hôtel Sainte-Valière, La Maison de Beaumont, Gibraltar Point, six months on the Gatineau River in Gatineau Park, Quebec. A published writer of creative non-fiction and personal essays, Baker brings a parallel interest in narrative and observation to her visual practice. She serves as Vice Chair/Incoming Chair of the Artists’ Network Board of Directors and is an Associate Member of the Society of Canadian Artists and a member of the Federation of Canadian Artists.
